Robert Womack and Toni Becker arrived in California in November 2021, struggling with addiction. They had no interest in meeting God there—but they soon found out that God had other plans in mind for them. Little did they know that a few short years later, they would launch an initiative called Luv in Motion as a result of their own experiences in the wake of addiction and recovery.
“I grew up in a small community and left home when I was 15 years old,” said Robert. “I got into drugs; I didn’t believe in God at all. After Toni and I moved to California, we got sober by going through a recovery program at The Crossing Church. But then we didn’t know what to do next. We were living in a car with all our possessions, taking showers at 24-hour gyms when we could. We were just worn out.”
One day, with no options left, Robert and Toni were sitting in their car—and in the rearview mirror, he saw The Crossing Church. With nothing left to lose, they decided to go inside.
Robert and Toni were immediately met with compassion and understanding. Within an hour and a half, someone arrived at the church to help them get connected to resources in the community and help them find a place to stay. From their own experience, they knew a serious gap existed for people like them—people who had done the work to achieve sobriety but didn’t have connections to thrive afterward.
For many people in recovery programs in Costa Mesa, it is hard to transition into life and community when the program ends. Insurance often stops covering people after 90 days, which leaves them alone to pick themselves up.
Robert and Toni founded Luv in Motion to engage people with purposeful volunteer opportunities after their recovery programs, helping them to transition into a meaningful community that points them to how much God loves them. Through this foundational work, the program also teaches job skills and offers job-placement for long-term success. The initiative received $16,000 in funding through the Kingdom Advancing Grant, which will go toward supplies for service projects, transportation costs for participants, and more.
Today, Robert heads up Luv in Motion with the support of The Crossing Church, and Toni co-leads the program. They connect clients to meaningful opportunities that remind people in recovery of their inherent dignity and worth in Christ. Their goal is to grow Luv in Motion into the premier resource for local recovery and sober living programs by creating a supportive environment for service and connection. They hope to develop sober living homes for coupes and women with children.
